Abstract
La historia económica y política de Venezuela a mediados de los años cuarenta y cincuenta del siglo XIX estuvo agitada social y políticamente por una medida económica que condujo a nuestro país a la Guerra Federal. Esa medida consistió en promover el crecimiento económico a través de la libertad de contrato. Esto trajo como consecuencia profundos conflictos en la sociedad venezolana de aquella época. Fermín Toro respondió contundentemente a esta corriente desde una perspectiva cristiana y sentó un principio básico para conducir al equilibrio de nuestra sociedad: la libertad absoluta tenía que estar subordinada al espíritu de la ley y de la igualdad y el Estado tendría la responsabilidad de restituir la armonía social.
