Abstract
Este artículo presenta una breve reseña del vigésimo quinto Congreso Internacional de Matemáticos celebrado en Madrid en agosto de 2006. Esta describe aspectos relevantes del evento como la ceremonia inaugural que incluye las palabras del Presidente Honorario del congreso, El Rey de España, la entrega de las Medallas Fields y los premios Nevanlinna y Gauss, así como los alcances del congreso en términos de conferencias plenarias, por secciones y satelitales, afiches, ponencias, etc. También se mencionan algunas de las principales actividades culturales programadas. Adicionalmente, se relata brevemente la historia de la Unión Matemática Internacional y el congreso desde sus orígenes. Finalmente, se dan algunas reflexiones sobre este importante acontecimiento matemático mundial.

| Resumen en otro Idioma | This article presents a short account on the twenty fifth International Congress of Mathematicians held in Madrid in August of 2006. This describes relevant aspects of the event as the opening ceremony that includes the speech of the congress Honorary President, The King of Spain, the presentation of the Fields Medals and the Nevanlinna and Gauss prizes, as well as the accomplishments of the congress in terms of plenary, by sections and satellite conferences, posters, short communications, etc. Also some of the main scheduled cultural activities are mentioned. Furthermore, the history of the International Mathematical Union and the congress is briefly related from its origins. Finally, a few reflections on this important worldwide mathematical event are given. |
