Resumen en otro Idioma | The oral health of the people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHIV/AIDS) plays an important role due to the fact that the diagnosis of the oral manifestations in the early stages of the disease will allow a better prevention, control and treatment. A descriptive study was conducted to diagnose the most frequent oral pathologies and important dental aspects. The statistical population was conformed by 700 subjects registered in the PRONASIDA-LARA program, and it was selected a non-probabilistic sample of 74 PLWHIV. The average age of the group was 33.9±13.44 years. It was carried out an oral examination and also an interview about dental aspects. The oral examination showed that 66.2% had dental caries; 50.0% have had oral candidiasis; 62.2% do not visit a dentist. Out of the total that do not identified themselves as seropositives (n=39), 25.6% visit a dentist (p<0.05), and 42.0% needed “urgent” dental treatment. The average of tooth loss was 2.67±1.4, and the total of tooth lost due to caries was 78% and 62.2% corresponds to molars. The findings of the study showed the need to develop preventive and educational activities to motivate PLWHIV/AIDS to visit a dentist for an early diagnosis to improve their oral health and avoid jeopardizing their general health. |
