Resumen en otro Idioma | The Wildlife Refuge Aves Island in Venezuela is the main nesting area for Chelonia mydas in the country and the second largest breeding colony of relevant in the Caribbean. This investigation determined the hematological values of this specie nesting population in the beach, being collected between July and September 2010 blood samples of 64 turtles (52 females and 12 males) by puncturing the dorsal cervical sinuses. A complete hematological study was performed including the Count of Red Blood Cell (RBC) and White Blood Cell (WBC), Hematocrit (Hct), Hemoglobin (Hb), Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) and Leukocytes differential count. We measured the Curved Carapace Length (CCL), Curved Carapace Width (CCW) and Length of the Tail (LT), in males, to estimate the minimum sexual maturity size. The average values obtained were: RBC 457.187×10 3 µL; WBC 3.66×10 3 µL; Hct 30.77%; Hb 9.60 g/dL; MCV 727.83 fL; MCH 226.08 pg and MCHC 31.21 g/dL. The differential leukocyte count was: Heterophils 52.3% (1.990×10 3 /µL), lymphocytes 36.0% (1.297×10 3 /µL), Eosinophils 7.4% (0.234×10 3 /µL), Monocytes 3.8% (0.123×10 3 /µL) and Basophils 0.4% (0.0097×10 3 /µL). Two female turtles had emerging fibropapillomas the front flippers and the cervical region. The means of CCL and CCW for nesting females were 112.1 and 101.4 centimeters respectively, males had averages of 105.6 cm CCL, 96.2 cm CCW and 34.3 cm LT. A test U Mann-Whitney show a significant differences (P = 0.038) between sexes for MCV values. The obtained results agree with the values documented for healthy populations of C. mydas in the Atlantic and can be used as reference to assess the health status of other nesting populations of sea turtles in Venezuela and the Caribbean. |
