(tratamiento no contingente).

Resumen en otro Idioma | It has been hypothesized that preys and predators have coevolved in an arm race in which they traits that made one evident to the other have progressively vanished. There is, however, a trait that is difficult to concealed: the temporal correlation of the movements of preys and predators associated with hunting and avoidance. In this study we evaluate the effect of a simulated predator on the grouping behaviour of wild birds visiting an artificial feeder. We applied two treatments: one in which the simulated predator showed every time the birds arrive (contingent treatment), and one in which it showed at regular intervals (non-contingent treatment). In both cases we registered the times of arrival of birds before and after the treatment was applied. We found that the predator stimulus increased the frequency of bird arrivals at the feeder and their concentration in time. Both effects were stronger in the contingent than in the non-contingent treatment. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the correlation between their movement and the predators’ constitute a signal for birds to group as a defence against predation. |
