Es una investigación descriptiva y de campo, realizada para identificar las condiciones de nutrición, salud y
socioeconómicas en 117 estudiantes de nuevo ingreso en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Los
Andes, Mérida, Venezuela. El estado nutricional se diagnosticó según indicadores antropométricos y bioquímicos.
El estado de salud actual, se determinó por interrogatorio médico y examen clínico directo. Los datos
socioeconómicos se obtuvieron por encuesta basada en el cuadernillo “Perfil del Estudiante Universitario”. El
73.5% de la muestra presentó estado nutricional normal y 26.5% malnutrición, de los cuales 17.1% se encuentra
bajo la norma y 9.4% están sobre la norma. En el diagnóstico de salud actual, 61.50% presentó alguna o varias
patologías asociadas, siendo frecuentes las enfermedades de las vías respiratorias superiores, las relacionadas con
la nutrición y las de la piel. En relación con la estratificación socioeconómica, 43.6% de los estudiantes se
ubicaron en estratos medio-medio, 39.3%, medio–alto y 11.1% en estrato medio-bajo, no hubo estudiantes del
estrato socioeconómico bajo. Se concluye que los estudiantes investigados son un grupo en riesgo biológico. Se
sugiere su control y seguimiento a través de programas preventivos en nutrición y salud que garanticen su
bienestar y éxito académico en la universidad.

Resumen en otro Idioma | A field cross-over study was done with the purpose of defining a profile of nutrition, health, socioeconomic stratification in a group of 117 freshman students from the medical school, University of the Andes, Merida, Venezuela. The nutritional state was diagnosed individually using anthropometrical and biochemical indicators. The actual state of health was determined through medical interrogation, direct clinical test and biochemical glycolic test. The socioeconomic and demographical information was taken by survey using the booklet “Profile of the university student”. In the nutritional evaluation, 73.5% of the sample was normal. Malnutrition was observed, of which 17.1% was substandard and 9.4% was above standard. The current health diagnosis showed that 61.5% presented some or several associated pathologies. The most frequent were pathology of the superior airways, followed by nutritional and skin pathologies. Regarding socioeconomic stratification, 43.6% of the students came from middle-class and 39.3% from higher-middle-class, the lower-middle-class was represented by 11.10% and none of the students were from the lowest socioeconomic class. It is concluded that this group of students is at biologically risk. For this reason health and nutritional preventive programs are suggested to guarantee their well-being and academic success in the university. |
