dc.description.abstractLa caries dental es una enfermedad donde intervienen factores internos: huésped, saliva y dieta y factores externos: condición socioeconómica, hábitos alimenticios, higiene bucal, nivel de educación de la madre y hábitos. Existe suficiente evidencia que la presencia de placa bacteriana es uno de los factores que contribuyen a la caries dental y que su remoción previene la aparición de la misma. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar las condiciones de higiene bucal en niños en edad escolar, en la Escuela Básica “Filomena Dávila” del Estado Mérida, Venezuela. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, transversal. La población estuvo constituida por un total de 128 niños, que cumplieron los criterios de inclusión, entre 6 y 13 años de edad. Se aplicó el Índice de Higiene Oral Simplificado (OHI-S). Se encontró que el 91,4 % de la población estudiada presentó detritus blando con predominio en los niños de 8 y 11 años, en contraste con el 8,6% que no presentó. Al relacionar las variables presencia de detritus, género y edad, se observa que los niños de género masculino presentan mayor cantidad y de esa población, la edad más frecuente es de 11 y 9 años. El 79,7% no presentó cálculo dental, en contraste con un 20,3% que sí presentó. Al relacionarlo con género y edad, se observa que la mayor cantidad fue encontrada en las niñas de 10 años. Se concluye que el mayor porcentaje de la población estudiada presenta un alto porcentaje de detritus blando con un menor porcentaje que presenta cálculo.es_VE

dc.description.abstract1The dental decay is a disease where internal factors: the guest, saliva and diet and external factors: the socioeconomic condition, nutritional habits, buccal hygiene, level of education of the mother and habits. Sufficient evidence exists that the presence of bacterial plaque is one of the factors that contribute to the dental decay and that its removal prevents the appearance with the same. Nevertheless, these assertions contrast actually by the high prevalence of these diseases in the population. Therefore, the present study has like to evaluate the status of buccal hygiene in school-age children, from the Basic School “Filomena Dávila” in Mérida, Venezuela. A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. The population consistd of 128 children, because all the children met the inclusion criteria aged between 6 and 13 years. Applying the simplified Oral Hygiene Index, were studied. Finding that 91,4% of the studied population showed detritus with predominance in the children of 8 and 11 years, in contrast to 8.6% that did not present. When relating variable the detritus presence, sort and age, is observed that the masculine children present major amount and of that population, the most frequent age is of 11 and 9 years. The 79,7% did not present dental calculus, in contrast to 20,3 % if presented. When relating it to sort and age, it is observed that the greater amount was found in the children of 10 years. It is possible to be concluded that the largest percentage of the participants showed high levels of dental plaque and a lower percentage presents calculus.es_VE
