Resumen en otro Idioma | This paper analyzes the discursive strategies that circulate during 1895 and 1897 in El Cojo Ilustrado de Caracas around the discovery of microbes and their closest correlates: pollution and disease. It explores the relationship with fear established by the society of that time. They will be addressed two of the most frequent topics circulating in the journal during those years; on one hand, the issue of weakness as opposed to the notions of citizen force necessary to carry out labors demanded by society of that time; in this sense, they will be analyzed the most evident bodily signs: chlorosis, fatigue, nervous diseases, extreme thinness and the wide range of restorative tonics to alleviate them. On the other hand, they will address some of the microbes transmitted diseases: plague, diphtheria, tetanus, cholera, tuberculosis, etc. Against these, discourses seek to weaken fear with hygienists practices dedicated to contain the spreading of the disease. An analysis of the discourses revolving around the weakness and pollution shows that the first, involves a difficulty surmountable by a rich pharmacopoeia destined to overcome their difficulties. Regarding pollution reaction is different because it is an unequal battle against a new and therefore, unknown opponent. This is why discourses oscillate between the warning, the prophylaxis and indiscriminate information of the danger of this new invisible enemy. |
