En la Mérida del siglo XVIII, la
carta dotal constituyó el instrumento
legal que cerró el trato entre los
padres de familia y los pretendientes,
comprendiendo el matrimonio como
un contrato, ya sea civil o eclesiástico.
Acto que evidenció que los intereses
económicos estaban por encima de los
sentimentalismos, pues con lo segundo
no era posible una vida cómoda entre
otras cualidades que el dinero ofrecía. En
este artículo analizaremos el simbolismo
económico y el imaginario social que
representaban el dinero y los bienes
entregados en algunas cartas dotales.
