Resumen en otro Idioma | In 1992, a study carried out by Danida indicated that although each country had an administered bank of seeds for the national forest institution this had limitations to carry out the gathering works, prosecution and distribution of seeds and they did not have selected seed sources technically managed to produce seeds of genetic and physiologic quality. On the other hand, the users of forest seed generally had null or little understanding of the economic advantages of using seeds of good quality. Behind this situation and as support to the forest sector, from 1992 to 2001, the CATIE carried out the Project of Forest Seeds (PROSEFOR) in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and Dominican Republic, which was financed by the Danish Assistance for the Development (Danida). The objective of PROSEFOR was "to contribute to increase the benefits of the cultivation of trees in Agroforestry systems and plantations, enhancing the sustainable use of natural resources by being able to increase the production and the use of significantly improved seeds in the seven countries in which the project was carried out. During the Phase I, from 1992 to 1998, the main activities were oriented to strengthening the banks of seeds, the creation of networks, selection and handling of seed sources and to staff training in the production processes, gathering, processing, storage and marketing of seeds. In the Phase II, from 1999 to 2001, follow-up was given to the schievements of the Phase I and it was carried out an intense work of understanding of superior authorities and consumers, about the importance to strengthen the banks of seeds and to promote the use of officially registered seeds, to increase the yield of the plantations. In this document, impacts, goals and achievements that the PROSEFOR and their Connections reached in each country, the main opposing problems and the future actions that each country should continue are got to know |
