Resumen en otro Idioma | This article presents an etnological and social anthoropological analysis of yhe etnographic and statistic information that was gathered in the venezuelan Andes from 1982 to 1985, among the public health centers and the ilegal (magic-religious) centers. The privileged semantic field of each medical system is not understood by the other one, the representation of sickness of the patient in the hospital and in the magic center is a cultural mechanism of defense as an effort of adaptation to the new social-cultural situation. The graduate doctor often handles two conceptions of medicine without being aware of it. The attitude towards the different system is more opened and tolerant in the "medicine man" than in the legal doctor; but sometimes it occurs that the seconds one is the patient of the first one and on the contrary. The hospital attracts the people because of its modernizing image, but its low efficiency is admited by the total universe of patients what contributes to the colective passivity during periods of hospital strikes. |
