Mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis

In a 45-years old farmer from the town of Barinas / Venezuela an easily bleeding skin ulcer of the size of 4x5 cm. developed at the right side of the chin, allegedly as a consequence of an insect bite.

Carcinoma

In a 65-year old inhabitant of the town of Barinas / Venezuela an oval skin ulcer of 8x6 cm developed on the left cheek. It showed a central necrosis and elevated borders.

Mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis

The biopsy shows in the HE stain a non-specific granulation tissue. Within some histiocytes several small granular elements are seen, representing amastigotes of Leishmania brasiliensis, which are Grocott-negative. Identification of these elements is not easy.

Carcinoma

The biopsy shows a poorly cornified squamous cell carcinoma. Numerous atypical nuclei and mitoses are seen.
