Mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis

A 32-year old farm-hand from the Venezuelan Andes, who is living in a village situated at 1000 m. altitude refers to the doctor, that he was bitten on the nose by an insect three weeks ago. Later developed a painful redness of the skin with ulceration of a nodule covered by a crusty material.

Prurigo solar (bullous dermatitis solaris)

In a 6-year old girl from Barinas / Venezuela developed a skin defect covered by a crust after the exposition of several hours at the sun in the garden at lunchtime. An extensive medical examination of the child and treatment confirmed the diagnosis.

Mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis

In the smear from the ulcer of the nodule numerous leishmanias are found accompanied by leuco-und histiocytes. The amastigotes with the small rod-like Kinetoplasts may be recognized by this high magnification with the Giemsa stain.
