Sporotrichosis

All fingers of both hands were affected. The diagnosis was made by culture and inoculation of the clinical material into the tail of a rat. The healing after a treatment of three months is shown here.

In the biopsy of this, fungi, as usual, could not be observed. The tissue reaction was typical: a non-specific inflammation and several giant cells are seen in the HE stain and under low power.

Sporotrichosis

In smears taken from the bottom of the ulcer which had developed after the inoculation into the rat tail, some black coloured granular and elongated small fungi of the dimorphic Sporothrix schenckii were found. Combination of the HE and the Grocott stain.

Here the cultures of the dimorphic Sporothrix schenckii are seen: On the left the mycelial form at 20º C and on the right the yeast form at 37º C in the tissue.
